Private Tour: Gros Morne Tablelands and Discovery Center, with Lunch
Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada
- Discovery Center: Learn how formidable geological forces created the imposing wonder that is Gros Morne (pronounced "grow morn"). Interactive exhibits give insights into the landscape and natural history of this World Heritage Site.
- The Tablelands: This awe-inspiring sight features a massive chunk of the Earth's mantle that was thrust up to the surface eons ago. Explore this dramatic landscape and understand how it was shaped by clashing continents and grinding glaciers.
- Local flavors: Enjoy fresh-caught seafood (or a seafood alternative) at a restaurant in Woody Point – a delicious way to experience this province's fishing heritage. The local catch can include salmon, cod, trout, and Arctic char.
About this Corner Brook tour
Newfoundland is typically a windy spot. But even if you arrive on a rare still day, expect to be blown away at Gros Morne.
The Tablelands is an enigmatic, almost eerie place. It looks more like a dramatic desert landscape than an Eastern maritime province. Deep ocean crust lies exposed. A rust-colored mountain of the Earth's mantle towers above the little village of Woody Point. These remarkable features were forced up from the depths when plates of the Earth met in a massive collision several hundred million years ago.
Your GoBe guide will unravel these geological quirks and the secrets of this stark and incredible landscape. Some of these mysteries were solved by a Newfoundland-born geologist, Harold Williams, in the 1960s and 70s. His theory of colliding super-continents helped advance the theory of plate tectonics (the large-scale motion of the Earth's crust). But you don't have to be a geologist to get this – the landscape actually shows you some of the effects of these moves. Gros Morne is a clever teacher.
The name Gros Morne roughly translates from French as the "great somber" – a name you'll understand as you walk in this grand, mysterious, and moody spot. Even once you understand its secrets, this is a place that moves you. At the Great Somber you'll feel the very soul of an ancient landscape.
Digging to the center of the earth
Seeing a section of the earth's mantle must be on every geologist's bucket list. The mantle – a layer about 1,800 miles thick between our planet's core and the crust – is deep and mysterious. Drilling down to the Moho (the division between crust and mantle) is a milestone that's yet to be reached. Project Mohole, begun by the U.S. in the 1950s but abandoned due to cost, never reached a depth beyond about 600 feet under the seafloor.
