Sea Turtle Rescue Center with Acapulco City Tour
Tour Participation Requirements
The journey is part of the adventure on your excursion to the Sea Turtle Rescue Center, as the trip takes you first through downtown Acapulco on a comfortable coach bus. Your guide will point out historic landmarks and other attractions, including the Dolores Olmedo House that features murals by artist Diego Rivera.
From there, you’ll head about 20 miles south of Acapulco, enjoying views of the beaches and expansive Pacific Ocean. Away from the busy city, the Sea Turtle Rescue Center is located on a charming, tranquil beach. The facility is run by a local environmentalist who seeks to improve the chances of survival of hatchling Golfina sea turtles, which are endangered.
Upon arrival, you will be briefed by the Center’s specialists on how their program works and the numerous ways it helps the environment. You’ll also see the baby turtles in various stages of development – from the eggs the Center rescues to the tanks where the infants are housed until they’re ready to return to the ocean.
The most exciting part of the visit is your walk down to the shoreline. You’ll receive and name your turtle, and then release it into the ocean. You act as the escort for the hatchling on its 25-minute journey down the beach into the surf, protecting it from the predators the turtles face during the trip. The emotion you feel while watching your turtle swim away will be memorable, as you’ve made a difference in improving their survival and reaching maturity.
Your Job is Important
The mortality rate of a young sea turtle is astounding: Of the roughly 100 eggs that are laid at one time, only about one from the nest will survive to adulthood. Predators such as rodents, seabirds – and even other turtles – often eat the baby turtles as they make their way from the hatch site to the ocean. Plus, the growing presence of humans and development, such as high-rise hotels along the beach, make life difficult for the hatchlings. Fortunately, adult sea turtles have few predators, with sharks and crocodiles as the biggest threats. Your job at the Sea Turtle Rescue Center is to help the hatchlings make it that far.
