About This Guadalajara Tour
Scream your throat sore and cut loose completely, as you join a rowdy crowd of locals for Lucha Libre at beloved Arena Coliseo. Meaning "free fight," this Mexican flavor of professional wrestling is characterized by luchadores (wrestlers) wearing colorful, imposing masks.
You'll be ushered to your ringside seats in time to warm up your vocal chords. It's saints vs. demons and superheroes vs. villains, as an inferno of lights blazes, and each luchador jumps into the ring. Cheer Tecnicos, the law-abiding nice guys, boo and hiss Rudos, the corrupt bad guys who cheat their way to takedowns, and pick up brawl-appropriate insults in Spanish. It's all in fun, and man, is there a ton of it!
Spinning, pinning, tumbling, tackling, slingshotting, and soaring from ropes–as wild as it seems, there's lots of prep involved, and rules do apply. Many wrestlers and teams descend from the same well-trained, extended families. Moves like the "piledriver" and groin punches are no-nos, and so is ripping off an opponent's mask, which results in disqualification. That's saved for high-stakes matches in which the loser must remove his mask...forever.
Of course, grub makes the rounds here too, so grab ahold of those roving gastronomic delights. Also, don't even think of walking away without a mask of your own, on sale for a few pesos outside the coliseo. With the roar of the fans still in your ears, try out some new mind-blowing, trademark moves back home. Now, what do you plan to call yourself?
"The Silver-Masked One"
With wrestlers dubbed "El Diablo Blanco," clearly, each match is a battle of good vs. evil. And "El Santo" portrayed one of the most famous Tecnicos ever. Debuting in 1942, as an unlikely "Rudo," "The Saint" later turned honest, fought for 40+ years, and starred in comic books and over 50 action-fantasy films. His global legend chased him to the grave. He was buried in his iconic mask, removed only once in public...on TV, a week before his death.
