Seeking an idyllic scene? In Chapala and Ajijic, you're in lots of good company. Many Tapatios (people of Guadalajara), as well as international travelers and retirees, crave Lake Chapala's shores. Relish the peace and quiet, away from the big-city hustle and bustle. GoBe will get you there. Along the way, pass the ranch of legendary Vicente Fernandez, known as "The King of Ranchera Music" and "The Sinatra of Rancheras."

Promenade cobblestone streets and each town's waterfront malecon ("boardwalk"). Lake Chapala, ringed by lush, volcanic mountains and palm trees, is home to flora and fauna both indigenous and visiting. Nature lovers keep an eye out for marine life and migrating birds, including the wintering American white pelican. People watching can be fun, too. Glimpse boaters, vendors hawking charales (finger-sized fish), and mariachi

Templo de San Francisco de Assis Chapala's parish church, dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi. Built between 1668 and 1692, and standing on the site of an even older Franciscan church and convent, this historic landmark holds a place of honor near the town's pier. Parishioners ensure the faithful preservation of its breathtaking architecture and religious artwork.

Nearby rises El Restaurante Cazadores. Now the brick waterfront beauty overlooking the boardwalk hosts a popular dining spot. But back in the day, the grandly turreted, Victorian mansion was known as Casa Braniff, the summer home owned by the Braniff family of (defunct) airline fame. You're invited inside to admire her antique treasures. For such a placid place, this area humbly boasts a riot of color, heritage, and charm.

Birds aren't the only expats in these parts

Around 12,000 immigrants, many retirees from the U.S., Canada, and Europe, savor new lives at Lake Chapala. They seem to never tire of benefits like a lovely landscape, near-perfect climate (73-93 degrees year-round), social atmosphere, and many ways to make those pension pesos stretch farther. Even if you stay unmoved into retiring soon too, today, you can still enjoy the artistic community and exotic blend born here as a result.
