      About This La Paz Tour

The La Paz area, around the Sea of Cortez, offers some of the best diving in Baja California, more so because shore dives aren’t really an option. You’ll need to head out in a boat, so dive spots can vary by weather and water conditions, and the desires of the diver and guide. The best times to go are from July to December when visibility can approach 80 feet.

Expect to see all kinds of marine life, such as Cortez angelfish, cocooned parrotfish, king angelfish, orange cup corals and groupers. In late summer and early fall, watch out for majestic rays that glide by on slowly flapping “wings.” The area is also known for its variety of sea mammals and large fishes.

Playful sea lions have colonized Los Islotes, just north of Espiritu Santo, so don’t be surprised if one comes right up to you for a closer look. At 50 feet long and with a checkerboard pattern on their backs, whale sharks are hard to miss as they filter feed on microorganisms. The biggest mammals you’re likely to encounter are gray whales that can reach up to 50 feet as well. They migrate from the Arctic to have their calves in the warmer waters around January and February.

Among the wrecks that litter the sea floor around La Paz is the 300-foot-long ferry Salvatierra, which grounded on Suwanee Rock in the San Lorenzo channel in June 1976. This vessel was originally designed as a World War II landing ship tank. The crew and 22 truck drivers on board survived the sinking, although the ship and the trucks it was carrying ended up under 60 feet of water. The wreck is now a popular haven for fish and other marine life.
