La Paz Whale Shark Encounter (Seasonal)

      Los Cabos, Mexico
From (USD) $251 Per Adult (Minimum 4) / $154 Per Child
      • First things first: An air-conditioned, chauffeur-driven van picks you up at your hotel for a comfy drive to the dock in La Paz. While you might feel some butterflies in your stomach on this tour, a complimentary breakfast snack ensures that the flutters won’t be hunger pangs! Later on, a Mexican lunch is also served.
      • Loco-Motion: Climb aboard the 25’ boat that speeds you to your whale shark rendezvous. The 9-guest capacity of the craft is ideal, allowing the time and focus of your certified guide to remain on a small and intimate group.
      • Suit up and dive down: Snorkel equipment is provided. It’s a life-altering moment as you slip into the ocean and first glimpse the mighty grandeur of a whale shark. Behold its enormous body; gape at its massive mouth. Then repeat like a mental mantra, “This shark eats only fish no larger than my pinkie. I am safe.”
      About This Los Cabos Tour

With all due respect to Captain Kirk, it seems that outer space is actually notthe Final Frontier. Despite the fact that our global ocean covers 3/4 of planet Earth, less than 5% of its secrets have been uncovered. By that measure, this incredible “voyage” of a tour can be your very own Star Trek adventure as you “boldly go” to a “strange new world,” swimming with massive whale sharks in the incomparable Sea of Cortez.

A chauffeur-driven, air-conditioned van picks you up at your hotel, beginning your tour with cool and roomy comfort for the 2-hour trip to La Paz. The tour boat is anchored in the bay of La Paz, this being the port most near the whale sharks’ favorite underwater hang-outs!

Aboard the 25-foot tour boat, we’ll begin our search for a rendezvous partner. Success is impossible to guarantee, but with eagle eyes and a bit of luck, we’ll have entered the realm of the whale shark almost before you can say, “Beam me down, Scotty.” These gentle, enormous creatures - some longer than four king-sized beds laid out side-by-side – are as elegant as they are benign. Swim and snorkel alongside as they glide slowly through the water to scoop up a lunch of plankton. Efficiency, for them, is a virtue. Spotting a school, they’ll swim in its midst and open wide (VERY wide!) for a mouthful, releasing the water through seining gills and swallowing the plankton that remain.

The quintessential swimming partner, whale sharks are so docile by nature that they’re quite willing to let you approach. Swim inches away, be awed by its sheer size and the intricate pattern of lines and dots that mark them like fingerprints. Just resist the urge to touch. Direct contact with skin leaves them open to infection. Eventually, yes, we must return to shore. Here you can enjoy a tasty fish taco lunch washed down with non-alcoholic beverages - and a mental neon sticky note for your virtual tricorder, before returning to Cabo.

“Resigning from Star Fleet. Found a new world to explore.”

With kids, it’s MacDonalds. In Tinseltown, it’s Château Marmont. For Broadway, Le Cirque. Everyone has a favorite place to go; that perfect spot where you can count on dining well. Even whale sharks, whose favorite bistro happens to be the bay of La Paz. From early spring through late summer, these waters become a carpet of plankton…and right behind them, whale sharks glide in to suck up the nibbly morsels like Hoover vacuums! Clearly a migration Mecca, La Paz was established by Neolithic hunter-gatherers 10,000 years ago. Maybe the whale sharks were here even then, called by the Coromuel Winds…a weather phenomenon unique to La Paz that blows brawny gusts from the Pacific Ocean, over the peninsula, and directly into its bay each night. Whatever the reason, whale sharks keep an annual reservation at the La Paz Bay aquatic buffet!
