      About This Mexico City Tour

The southern neighborhoods of Mexico City are among the most colorful and vibrant, and these districts are where your excursion begins. Coyoacan is the “place of coyotes” in the native language of Nahuatl, and its position as the historic center of the city dates back to pre-Columbian times. This charming district was the site where Cortes prepared his war strategy to fight the Aztecs, and, as such, it became one of the first settlements of the new Spanish colony.

Coyoacan has retained its village-like atmosphere, making it a magnet and inspiration for numerous artists who were drawn to its beauty. One key attraction is the Ciudad Universitaria that features a collection of murals and sculptures from renowned Mexican artists. At the Olympic Stadium, constructed for the 1968 Games, you’ll see artwork of Diego Rivera. Your trip includes a stop at the home of another famous Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo. The museum bearing her name includes many of her paintings and personal belongings. The rooms of Kahlo’s long-time home are still decorated in the 1950’s interior design styles that were popular when she died.

Your excursion concludes with a visit to Xochimilco, one of the most scenic areas of Mexico City. Experience this neighborhood’s character by strolling along its canals to admire the floating gardens, bright flowers and lively atmosphere. Local vendors may present colorful bouquets for purchase.

      The Mariachi

If the mariachi bands you see are playing instruments that look oddly familiar, it’s for good reason. The Spanish introduced string instruments to pre-Columbian Mexican music that, at the time, was largely based on rattles, drums, flutes and shells. The indigenous people and their descendants learned to play these instruments, but they often modified the shapes, materials and tunings. A typical mariachi band includes two violins, a harp and multiple guitars – as well as a charismatic singer for the serenade.
