Sea Wolf Semi-Submersible Voyage to Lovers Cove

      Catalina Island, California, USA
      From (USD) $26 Per Person
      • The Sea Wolf: Enjoy the view from the main deck of this spacious custom semi-submersible as we sail through the bay, then head down to the huge viewing windows when we dive.
      • Lovers Cove: This marine preserve just east of the marina shelters a wealth of sea life, with Avalon and the Catalina Mountains behind you, and California's mainland straight ahead.
      • Above and below: Your captain will identify all the fish and sea mammals we encounter and tell you about the complex ecosystem that sustains them.
      About This Catalina Island Tour

Lovers Cove is one of California's prime snorkeling spots, but you won't need the gear. The Sea Wolf is a custom, purpose-built mini-sub that provides a unique portal into an underwater world.

This isn't a surface-skimming glass-bottom boat. The Sea Wolf scoots five feet below the surface, passing colorful reefs and rock formations and vast, 20-foot-tall forests of swaying kelp. You'll be eye-to-fisheye with a vast array of undersea critters in the clear waters offshore: bright orange garibaldi, spotted calico bass, urchins, rockfish, leopard sharks, bat rays, and more. You can usually spot sea lions and harbor seals frolicking beneath the waves, or barking and sunning themselves on the rocks of the coast.

And if you can't tell the difference between a calico bass and any other kind, no worries – the captain is there to explain everything you see. It's a lot of fun, and educational, too.

Goodbye, Norma Jean, Hello, Catalina Island

Beauty, privacy, and a location just 22 miles from Los Angeles made Catalina a favorite playground of Hollywood's biggest stars in the 1930s and '40s. Charlie Chaplin, Humphrey Bogart, Johnny Weissmuller, and John Wayne loved to sail, and could reach Avalon Harbor in just a few hours. Marilyn Monroe actually lived there, but when she was Norma Jean Dougherty, married to a sailor in the Merchant Marine.
