About this Chicago, Illinois tour
LEGO® bricks were invented by a Danish toymaker named Ole Kirk Kristiansen back in 1958. They way the bricks locked together was so unique that the design was patented, and kids' imaginations have been in overdrive ever since. Over the years, the company has introduced the DUPLO series for kids under five, mini-figures, motorized parts, and themed sets tied to book and movie characters. Few toys have inspired kids' creativity like LEGO bricks.
But wait, there's more. The first LEGOLAND Park opened in Denmark in 1968, followed by parks in California, Florida, and elsewhere. In 2007, LEGOLAND Discovery Centers were born. The first launched in Berlin, followed by the Chicago location in 2008 and others across the U.S., Europe, and Asia in recent years. All are designed for children ages 2-12 to learn, play, and let their imaginations go wild surrounded by more than three million bricks under one roof.
Believe it or not, building with LEGO bricks is more than just ridiculously fun and engaging – it's also a learning experience. Creativity, problem-solving skills, hand-eye coordination, cooperation, and social skills all come into "play" when kids construct something out of nothing – in this case a castle, pirate ship, or space station out of a brightly colored pile of LEGO bricks. But at this age, kids don't care about the benefits of such imaginative play – they just care that it's fun!
A mini windy city
Miniland Chicago is one of the most popular attractions within the LEGOLAND Discovery Center. It's built from almost two million LEGO bricks (wow), and includes many of the city's most iconic landmarks, like the Willis Tower, Navy Pier, Buckingham Fountain, and the Wrigley Building. It's also updated seasonally, so there's always something new to see. Be sure to check it out when you go.
