      Peerless pier

      Navy Pier opened in 1916 as Municipal Pier, and was renamed in 1927 to honor World War I Navy vets. It once held a prison for draft-dodgers, and was a training center for 15,000 WWII pilots, including President George H.W. Bush. Some of his classmates could have used more training there are 200 WWII-era planes at the bottom of Lake Michigan.
