About this Chicago, Illinois tour
Chicago may be called the Windy City, but it could also be called the Daley City. After all, so much of the city's skyline and the lakefront attractions are due to the efforts of Mayor Richard J. Daley (in office from 1955 to 1976) and his son, Mayor Richard M. Daley (1989 to 2011). On this dinner cruise, you'll see the mark that the Daleys' respective visions left on the city.
Your cruise starts at Navy Pier, the conglomeration of fun that Richard M. turned into the most popular destination in the Midwest, drawing nine million visitors each year. It's perhaps best known for its Ferris wheel, which is getting even bigger to mark the pier's 2016 centennial. Richard M. also supported Millennium Park, turning rail yards and parking lots to the second-biggest attraction in the city. The city's lakefront became more pristine under his reign as well.
While cruising, pay attention to the city's skyline. When white flight and urban decay took hold in the 1960s, both citizens and businesses moved out from downtown. Richard J.'s defiant response was to turn Chicago (home of the world's first skyscraper in 1885) into the City of the Big Skyscrapers. Three of the country's top eight tall buildings were constructed during his reign: John Hancock Center (No. 8, built in 1969), Aon Center (No. 7, built in 1973), and Willis Tower (No. 2, formerly the tallest in the U.S., built in 1974).
In a fitting tribute, Richard J. has a tall building in the skyline named after him: the Richard J. Daley Center. This modern building opened in 1965 as the Chicago Civic Center and was renamed to honor Daley, receiving its new moniker just a week after the long-time mayor died in office in 1976.
Briefcase full of blues – and bucks
The 1980 Blues Brothers movie seemed like a monument to excess at the time, what with its then-outrageous $30M budget, 13 Bluesmobiles, 40 stunt drivers, and a budget that even included a line item for cocaine. There's also a car crash scene in which the Bluesmobile plows through the Daley Center lobby. But this Dan Aykroyd-John Belushi comedy also helped put Chicago on the radar as a film location. Since then, over 200 flicks have been filmed there. Hit it.
