      About this Hawi tour

Despite its ongoing popularity among the tourists of the world, Hawaii has never lost the almost primeval purity of its countryside… and no place better exemplifies this than the natural wonders of the Island’s Kohala District.

The "secret" waterfalls found in Kohala are more than mere marketing speak: some of the most awe-inspiring waterfalls are so far off the beaten path that you'd need an airplane or a boat to spot them. Some reach as high as 1,450 feet tall, yet can vanish altogether depending on how much it rains in a given year.

But it is the dormant volcano that gives this district its name that gives rise to some of Kohala’s most interesting features. At an estimated million years old, Kohala Mountain witnessed such momentous moments in history as the last reversal of the Earth's North and South Poles, as well as an enormous tsunami that reached 1,640 feet high, bathing the mountain in fascinating fossils not found anywhere else.

Indeed, some of the rainforests on Kohala Mountain are so high that they get their moisture directly from the clouds instead of relying on precipitation, earning them the name "cloud forests." For generations the people of Kohala have harnessed groundwater from these and other moss-heavy forests, commandeering them through a complex system of irrigation channels and flumes to keep their crops watered.

But while Kohala Mountain may survive magnetic reversals and monster tsunamis, its surroundings may not be so lucky. With this primeval paradise under constant threat from erosion, industrialization, and invasion by alien plant and animal species, you’ll want to visit soon.

      Prehistoric bubble wrap

A breed of peat moss growing in the forests of Kohala Mountain may be the oldest multicellular organism in the world. First carried to Hawaii on the wind some 50,000 years ago, this same genetic strain of moss has been cloning itself ever since, giving scientists a rare, living artifact of the caveman days. For residents of Hawaii, however, this caveman moss has a different value altogether. Its millennia-spanning durability makes it the ideal material for packing boxes.
