About This Honolulu Tour
The La Kule'a tour is intended for all ages. You'll learn about the sophisticated Ahupua'a land management method and important Hawaiian values, such as Ohana (family), Kuleana (personal responsibility) and Aina (land). Your guide will regale you with the tale of the sailing canoe Hokulei'a, or Star of Gladness. During its global excursions, its crew teaches people all around the world about Malama Honua, or caring for the world.
Malama ka Aina, or caring for the land, is an ancient practice that defines the Hawaiian mind and soul. Living in the middle of the massive Pacific Ocean, the Hawaiians quickly learned which elements were critical for sustaining life. As the misty rains fell on the forests, they knew those rains kept the land alive. They observed the wind moving through the trees and imagined the swirling ocean waters below. They gasped at the rainbows among the clouds and deemed it a blessing from the heavens. While you learn the fundamental practices and traditions of ancient Hawaii, you'll engage in traditional island crafts and warrior games.
After your immersion experience, continue to the Honolulu Ridge. This flawless 1920's boutique estate is tucked in the rainforest in the hills above Honolulu. Home to Hawaii's first macadamia nut farm, the 22-acre estate provides 360-degree views of Waikiki Beach, the Pacific Ocean, Diamond Head and the Honolulu Skyline. Enjoy a delicious island brunch in this stunning location.
The Ahupua'a land management system defined ancient Hawaiian life. The system came about to protect the upland water resources essential for human survival. A standard Ahupua'a, or land division, had a wedge shape and ran from the mountains to the sea. Hawaiians understand water is a gift from the gods and should be used conservatively whenever possible.
