      • Historical tour: Head out with a guide for a historical tour of Juneau including the state capitol. Then, turn up the road to Gold Creek and "Last Chance Basin," where Joe Juneau and Richard Harris struck gold in 1880.
      • Gold Creek: See where early Alaskan prospectors struck gold in 1880, and learn about the early mining history of Juneau. Around you are remnants of the original buildings of the Alaska-Juneau Mining Company, which at the height of production was the largest operation of its type in the world.
      • Gold panning: Catch gold fever and learn how to expertly pan for gold. It takes a good eye, a good arm, and of course, a little bit of good luck.
      • Keep what you find: At Gold Creek, you'll be able to take a sparkly piece of Juneau home with you. You'll also receive a souvenir Orelove Brothers Gold Claim Certificate.

We'll do our very best to ensure you'll GoBe an explorer in Alaska. Please note there is very limited space available on this tour and all reservations must be reconfirmed. Thanks for your understanding.

Ever heard of Rockwell, Harrisburg or Pilzburg Alaska? No? Well, that's because it is now called Juneau, thanks to co-founders Joe Juneau and Richard Harris. Your guide will tell you all about this infamous pair who struck it rich (1000 pounds of gold ore rich), only to drink it all away and come back empty handed. With a little help and guidance from the natives, the two were once again finding the gold sweet spots, but were known for spending it faster than they could find it.

Once you reach the remote area of Gold Creek, your guide will demonstrate how the old prospectors panned for gold day after day in the hopes of finding their meal tickets. Once you've gotten the swing of things, it's time to try your hand at sifting and sorting; the techniques you'll learn are guaranteed to land you real gold – which you can keep all to yourself. You will also receive a souvenir "gold claim certificate" to prove your findings are legit, so you can consider yourself a gold digging expert.

      All that glitters

Joe Juneau and Richard Harris, the founding fathers of Juneau, weren't so good at saving their gold findings, and spent it faster than they could find it. These men loved a good drink, and if it weren't for the help of Tlingit Chief Kowee, they would have once again returned home with nothing but a hangover – and Joe Juneau would not have been able to pick up the tab for all the celebratory drinks he ordered after his name was chosen to represent the city.
