About this Juneau, Alaska tour
It was gold that spurred the birth of Juneau, named after one of the pioneers that came searching for Juneau's treasures at the end of the 19th century. Joe Juneau didn't quite know where to find his gold, but luckily a benevolent Chieftain pointed him in the right direction.
He set off with his partner along the Gastineau Channel, striking it rich with a mine on its shore. And while Joe Juneau's mine has long been shuttered, another Alaskan great struck some gold of his own here, too – Ladd Macaulay discovered a new way to breed salmon out of Juneau's old mineshaft, revitalizing Alaska's salmon fishing economy and creating a new "gold rush" in the process.
And while the literal gold may be gone from Gastineau today, Mendenhall Glacier shines bright like a diamond: it towers 12 miles high over a prehistoric ice field, with a majestic beauty you'll want to see with your own eyes.
This behemoth is moving at a glacial pace - the ice edges carefully forward just a few feet every day. A 3,000-year old remnant of Alaska's chilly past, Mendenhall will probably be around for a while longer, but you might want to hurry to explore her icy world. Roam freely in the Mendenhall Glacier visitor's center, and do make sure you take your time.
While salmon is the main attraction at Macaulay, be prepared to see over 100 species of local marine life in the hatchery's massive aquarium and touch-tank displays, where you'll have a chance to interact with these colorful sea creatures.
