No words can describe the feeling of seeing a giant humpback whale in the wild. These magnificent creatures can grow beyond 50 feet in length, and weigh over 40 tons. And on this tour, you'll enjoy an amazing up-close view of humpbacks, killer whales, sea lions, and more, thanks to the special type of boat you'll be on.

It's called a safari vessel, and it's specially built for watching and photographing marine wildlife, providing great views of southeast Alaska's coastal fjords, as well.

These vessels are large enough to be stable and steady, yet small enough to be amazingly maneuverable. Their oversized panel windows open from the inside, putting you pretty much eye to eye with any humpback that surfaces to take a closer look at you.

All seating is arranged around the perimeter of the cabin, which makes it easy to interact with the captain and the professional guide and move from side to side when whales and other creatures are spotted. And the padded armrests fold over the windowsills to give you a comfortable and steady platform for taking pictures.

In addition to the unique qualities of the custom designed vessel and the expertise of your guide and captain, all of the vessels are also equipped with a portable hydrophone sound system. If the occasion allows, these hydrophones can be used to hear the underwater sounds of nearby Humpback whales. Humpbacks are known to make a variety of sounds, including grunts, groans, snorts, and barks. But it's their long, loud "song" – which is only made by males – that this species is famous for. These songs can last up to 20 minutes, with entire groups of local whales singing the same song. If it happens while you're in the area, it'll be one of the most incredible concerts you ever experience.

Back off, pal, or I'll whale on you

Humpback whales were almost hunted into extinction. They're still a threatened species, but care and cooperation are bringing their numbers back. Newborns are larger than most cars, at 20 feet long and 2,000 pounds. They nurse for about six months on the mothers pink-colored milk, and begin mating at age five (females) or seven (males). A breaching whale, or one that slaps the water with its fin, could be saying hello to your group – or trying to intimidate male rivals for the affection of pod females.
