Waimea Canyon was once described by Mark Twain as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” and for good reason – the canyon stretches for 14 miles, and is a staggering 2,857 feet deep. It’s a lot greener than the actual Grand Canyon but it is equally impressive.

Just the ride up to the canyon alone is a sight to behold as you travel through the lush fields, and miles of pristine beaches. The 4,000-foot rise of the Na Pali Cliffs and Polihale Beach (the longest stretch of beach in Hawaii) are just a few of the sites you will see along the way. A stop at the Spouting Horn geyser provides the perfect place to stretch your legs as you wait for this active blowhole to show you its glory.

Years of erosion and landslides provide the backstory for the next stop on this experience, proving that after the rain truly comes the rainbow. This valley, which literally translates to ‘crushed bay’ from Hawaiian, is a rolling maze of dips and peaks and provides the perfect background for that vacation photo.

Hawaii may be know for its natural beauty and rich traditions but little know this state was actually a huge sugar producer back in the 19th century. Visit the sweet sugar towns of Old Koloa and Waimea to see how it all started, resulting in Hawaiians large mix of cultures.

Scenery, culture, history and more, if you want the best of Kauai, look no further.

      Rebuffing the Russians

When a Russian vessel was shipwrecked off the Waimea shore in 1815, King Kaumuali'i naturally assumed possession of the cargo. A diplomat was sent to reclaim the property, but got carried away when he instead decided to overthrow the great King Kamehameha I with Kaumuali'i's help. The Waimea people eventually grew suspicious of their king, and turned against him – throwing him out, and dismantling his fort. He never did reclaim the shipwrecked cargo.
