      About this Ketchikan tour

There's only one way to see – and feel – the majesty of Misty Fjords. From high in the sky, you'll have an eagle eye's view of the vast and awe-inspiring vistas of this ever-evolving landscape. And you become part of it all when your pilot lands gently in a pristine lake or saltwater inlet and you stand on the floats of the plane. What a way to savor the incredible scenery, serenity, and sweeping silence of the Mistys.

President Jimmy Carter understood that this unspoiled wilderness was one of our country's greatest treasures and proclaimed it a national monument in 1978. That would have made American naturalist John Muir very pleased. This region captivated Muir, who came here in the late 1800s to explore its cascading waterfalls, deep icy-blue lakes, soaring snow-topped peaks, and glacial valleys.

As a great lover of the wilderness, John Muir made his own proclamation about Alaska, calling it one of the most wonderful places in the world and nicknaming Misty Fjords the "Yosemite of the North." Fascinated by the forces that shaped this landscape, Muir was surely amazed – as you will be – when seeing New Eddystone Rock, a towering volcanic spire that's a dramatic reminder of geological activity six million years ago.

It took nature eons to carve this landscape out of fiery volcanoes and icy glaciers. And in just a couple of hours, you'll see sights that would have taken Muir weeks and weeks to explore by foot and kayak with his native guides. But how you explore matters less than why. As Muir once said, "In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks."

      Alaska's state bird?

Some locals joke that seaplanes, also called floatplanes, should be their state's avian emblem. After all, in the USA's largest state, seaplanes aren't just a fun way to get around, they're often the only way. In this densely forested terrain, the nimble and versatile seaplane can land in bays and inlets, connect towns located far from highways, and swiftly carry mail, supplies – and adventurous visitors – across the Last Frontier.
