      About This Ketchikan Tour

From high in the sky, you'll revel in a bird's-eye view of untamed beauty. We can almost guarantee you'll have your nose pressed to the glass as you gaze upon a 1,000-foot waterfall and 3,000-foot walls of granite plunging into the fjords. Then, your pilot sets down gently on the water. Step out onto the floats of the plane, breathe in the refreshing air, and hear the eagles call. This is the heart of wild Alaska.

It took nature eons to craft this incredible landscape out of fiery volcanoes and icy glaciers. On this adventure, you'll spy New Eddystone Rock, the towering volcanic spire that gives clues to the fiery birth of this dramatic land. You'll hear how massive glaciers carved this rugged, ice-rimmed land. And you'll understand why this national monument is a tribute to the magnitude and majesty of the wilderness.

The great American naturalist and author John Muir explored this region extensively in the late 1800s. Like you, he was seeking the incomparable beauty and adventure of the Last Frontier. (Unlike you, he had to explore on foot with native guides.) He was captivated by the tumbling waterfalls, icy-blue lakes, soaring snow-topped peaks, and glacial valleys – so captivated that he called Misty Fjords the "Yosemite of the North."

Muir chronicled his adventures in Travels in Alaska. Smitten by the beauty of this land, he revealed that the wilderness was a spiritual tonic for him. His passionate writing helped inspire presidents and congressmen to preserve the natural world. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed this a national monument, ensuring that future generations will see the Mistys just as you do. John Muir would be pleased.

      Frequent flyers

Alaska's rugged 375,000,000 acres has countless remote communities that can't be reached by road. That's why bush planes – also called seaplanes or floatplanes – are a lifeline, providing taxicab, ambulance, and mail carrier services. It's also why this is the most popular state for flying. One of every 58 Alaskans is a registered pilot, one out of 59 owns a plane, and everyone humorously refers to bush planes as "the state bird.
