About this Key West, Florida tour
This is the one and only Key West, famous for its laid-back approach to life and for having lots of everything. Lots of sun and adventurous history, lots of colorful characters, lots of shops, galleries, bars, and attractions. Even the cats here have lots of toes.
Where to start? That's easy. Get your Key West bearings with a narrated open-air tour aboard the Conch Tour Train, sharing in an experience that millions of others have had since 1958. It's a fitting way to get to know the Island City, which the wider world only got to know once the miraculous Overseas Railroad first arrived there in 1912.
Oh, and you will get to know the place. Because our expert "engineers" don't just transport you on a loop around town – they escort you through time, sharing captivating accounts of pirates and Indians, visionaries and artists, moguls, treasure-hunters, drinkers, and politicos.
They take you back to the earliest days when Spanish explorers first landed here, naming it "Bone Key" for the heaps of bones they found on the sand – remnants of defeated enemies left to bleach in the sun by "Indian" natives. And showcase Old Town's historic architecture – a quirky blend of Bahamian boat builder, Cuban cigar mogul, New England classic, and Southern Greek Revival styles – known for its storm-strong native woods, cool shaded porches, louvered shutters, and gingerbreading.
You'll de-train with a clearer picture of this isolated yet cosmopolitan town – once the richest in America – and a boatload of anecdotes, legends, and lore that confirm what you've always heard: there’s no other place on earth quite like this one.
And that's exactly how the Conchs want to keep it.
If you build it, they will come
Henry Flagler had what shrinks might call a serious Florida issue. Not content just to build his railroad tracks all the way to Miami, he spent another bunch of years, lives, turmoil, and dollars to span them across 130 miles of open water and islets to reach Key West. Angry hurricanes and hungry insects tried hard to stop progress, but he was unrelenting. Finally, in 1912, by then 80 and blind, he got his inaugural joyride direct from NY to KW by private railcar. The next day, the rest of the world starting coming, and modern Key West was on the map.
