About this Key West, Florida tour
They've been in movies, aquarium shows, and the imaginations of sea lovers for a long time.
But the Tursiops truncatus, more commonly known as the Bottlenose dolphin, isn't just a show pony. These dolphins are some of the smartest animals on Earth, capable of learning complex communication patterns and wearing sponges to protect themselves. Don’t worry about Bob though. They ignore sponges in pants.
As the only "Dolphin SMART" certified operator in the Keys, we let you watch them have fun in their natural habitat while protecting it for the future. These dolphins are playful, and many of them relish an audience to show off in front of. So, make sure to grab some pictures for your timeline.
Wind through the shallow waters of Key West as you enter backcountry, a section of marine wilderness that remains mostly undisturbed by human presence. This is where your snorkeling adventures begin: We'll take you around the home of marine residents like vivid coral, tropical fish, and sea sponges.
Help yourself to complimentary wine, beer and some soft drinks throughout the day, and if you decide on the sunset package, you're in for refreshing champagne and a majestic view of the afternoon turning into the evening like you've never seen before.
No rest for the weary
Though they are mammals just like humans, Bottlenose dolphins are not unconscious breathers. They must actively seek out the air that they need to stay alive, meaning these dolphins can never be fully asleep: Only one side of their brain can rest at a time, which is why dolphins literally have one eye open when asleep.
