About This Key West Tour
The Conch Republic is home to more than its share of colorful characters. But they're not all on land: There's a whole vibrant ecosystem of gorgeous blue waters, gnarly and resilient mangrove trees, and friendly creatures like manatees, dolphins, and tropical fish trying to get the most from each day – not unlike their land-based counterparts.
From your nimble chopper you'll get to see both sides of the island. Deep green clusters of mangrove trees and the dark shadows of coral reef systems are just a short distance away from the busy hubs of Mallory Square and Duval Street, where you'll watch ant-sized people milling about and enjoying the sun.
A different type of milling goes on in the Mud Keys, a small cluster of islands sliced by a series of creeks. Because the serene jade waters are protected wildlife management areas, they are frequented by ospreys, herons, and other birds looking for a safe place to roost.
Whether you're more interested in seeing Key West itself or the bustling habitat below its blue-green waters, one thing is for sure: The best way to get a broad perspective of Key West is seeing it from hundreds of feet in the air.
The 500 species of fish, 45 species of coral and roughly 1,700 species of mollusks of the reef system off Key West need professionals to study, manage, and help conserve their habitat, especially lately. A May 2016 study by marine biologists at the University of Miami found that the coral was deteriorating 50 to 60 years faster than expected.
