About this Key West, Florida tour
It's a thing. Late every afternoon, throngs of celebrants begin gathering in Mallory Square. They aren't awaiting an official bash, but an unofficial one. One that's been repeating itself since back before anyone reading this was alive. The astonishing pink, red, and gold daily departure of the sun, as it drops into the pale waters of the Florida Straits. Anyone who visits Key West is commanded to watch this show, at least once.
But here's your chance to go one better and be in the show – not just a landside spectator. Because the Schooner America 2.0 sails directly onto the stage where it's going down. For the lucky ones aboard, it's an experience that will replay itself in nightly dreams for years to come.
Equipped with immense sails, composite masts, and quiet electrically-powered motors, America 2.0's classic 105-foot hull slips effortlessly out into the sea. Her professional crew stands ready to help get you settled and comfortable – and well-served with complimentary bubbly, wine, beer, and soft drinks, along with tasty hors d'oeuvres. Many guests opt to bring along a picnic basket with their own favorite goodies, to make this a true al fresco feast.
As you savor all this, and the breezes, and the outstanding views of Mallory Square, Fort Zachary Taylor, and the Sand Key Lighthouse perched atop the reef in open water miles from shore – the fiery sun slowly gives way to the first evening stars. Be sure to be watching for company: dolphins, sea turtles, and water birds enjoy the show just as much as we do.
After a couple hours, you'll arrive back on land. Sad yet ecstatic. And knowing this is one of your bucket list items, checked off.
It's not the 100 Pound Cup anymore
Britannia may have ruled the waves, but on one August day in 1851, the rules changed. A radical new schooner sailed into history by winning – no, trouncing – all contenders in the Royal Yacht Squadron’s "100 Pound Cup" race off the Isle of Wight. Queen Victoria was watching as the America, captained and crewed by the New York Yacht Club, won the trophy that became forever known as the America's Cup. It's now the oldest and hardest-to-win prize in international sport.
