Numerous well known figures have visited and lived in Key West. President Harry S. Truman stayed on the island 11 times during his presidency from 1945 until 1953. He spent a total of 175 days on the U.S. Naval Base, which served as a southern White House. The only presidential museum in Florida, the Harry S. Truman Little White House is a featured stop on the tour.
Ernest Hemingway fans unite! Taking the Historic Key West Walking Tour of Old Town mansion, you will meet the author’s six-toed pet cat descendants that roam the Earnest Hemingway House Museum grounds, and who were not his only friends and inspiration. Hemingway lived large, adjacent to the Lighthouse from 1931 to 1961, and the Nobel Prize winning novelist wrote many of his books from this mystical place.
The spirit of Hemingway comes alive there and you can feel it!
The city has more than 3,000 historic homes and sites that date back to the Victorian Era and over 10 percent of Florida's largest collections of these wood frame buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
