Cows gone wild
The Parker Ranch, founded in the early 1800s, predates mainland ranches by more than 30 years. The cattle were originally given as gifts to the king in 1788, but were left to run rampant on the island. When John Palmer Parker arrived, the king was happy to have his help ridding the island of these feral animals, and granted him exclusive rights to provide meat and leather to the people.
