      Activity Level

This experience is rated mild. To participate fully, you may be required to walk over primarily even surfaces at a leisurely pace. You may encounter a limited number of steps, cobblestones, or uneven surfaces, and you may have to stand for extended periods of time.

      Age restrictions

      Suitable for all ages.

      Special Medical Restriction

Persons with heart or respiratory problems and pregnant women should check with their doctor before coming to the Park, given the reduced oxygen at high elevation. Travelers must not have gone scuba diving within 24 hours of ascending the summit.

Ancient Hawaiians named Mount Haleakala "The House of the Sun" in honor of an agreement between Maui, a Polynesian demigod, and La, the god of the sun. Because Maui's mother needed more sunlight to dry her laundry, the peak of the mountain was granted 15 extra minutes of sunlight, which is still the case to this day. The 37-mile trip to the top only takes a couple of hours, but the contrasting views along the way will make you feel as if you've traveled across continents.

Sugar cane stalks line the roads at the base of the mountain, but they quickly give way to Paniolo Country, a charming and rustic countryside where the original Hawaiian cowboys, the paniolos, first staked their claims. As you continue your ascent past the quaint stores and villages, you'll eventually wind through the sprawling colors of local protea farms. These unique, spiky flowers flourish in the mountain air and provide a stunning backdrop along the road.

After you cross the timberline, the changes are even more noticeable as cacti and silverswoods take over the landscape.. Keep an eye out for the rare Nene Goose, the Hawaiian state bird, which thrives at high altitudes and gets its name for its soft call.

When you finally reach the summit, take the opportunity to prepare yourself for the astonishing view. More than 10,000 feet above sea level, the colossal crater atop Mount Haleakala is more than 19 square miles and gives you an unparalleled perspective of the 2950-foot abyss below. If you wanted to go big on your Hawaii trip, this is certainly a good way to do it; the Haleakala Crater is big enough to swallow Manhattan.

      The big kahuna

Traditionally, regular visitors weren't allowed at the summit of Haleakala. It was thought to be a sacred site and only kahuna or shamans were allowed to make the trip. Today, many people still consider the journey to the top to be a spiritual journey, although we welcome everyone who just wants to be awed by the beautiful scenery and giant crater.
