About This Las Vegas Tour
In the 1920s, the U.S. needed a way to generate electricity for the growing population in parts of the American southwest including southern California, Nevada, and Arizona.
Most people know the story of what happened next: Between 1930 and 1935, thousands of workers toiled in the unrelenting Nevada heat to build one of the largest dams and most productive hydroelectric power plant the world had seen up to that point. Today’s Hoover Dam is a staple of both Nevada and American culture, seen in dozens of movies and T.V. shows.
A less-famous result of the dam’s construction is Lake Mead. By capacity, it’s the largest reservoir in the United States, stretching over 110 miles and over 530 feet deep when completely full – but because of the high demand for water in the areas it serves, Lake Mead hasn’t been filled up since 1983.
Its calm blue waters make the perfect daytime escape from the bright neon lights of The Strip. Cruising the lake aboard the elegant paddlewheel-powered Desert Princess provides a particularly smooth ride. It’s an experience that lets you appreciate both the stunning brown-orange cliffs nearby and the water itself, a serene treasure that flies under the radar of its high-profile concrete maker.
Hotel Pick-Ups are made at most major hotels on the Strip and Downtown. Please advise the name of your hotel at tour check out.
