About this Los Angeles, California tour
At the Aquarium of the Pacific, the fourth-most popular aquarium in America, you'll get acquainted with the creatures and environments that represent 63 million square miles of deep blue majesty, that is the Pacific Ocean
There are some 50 different exhibits here that house more than 11,000 unique animals. Sea jellies, penguins, coral, reef sharks, and scorpionfish: They're all waiting to meet you, but the delights at this aquarium are not just the visual kind. You'll stimulate your mind as well, through interactive shows at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ocean Science Center like "The Story of El Niño," which tells of how the weather disruption in the Pacific affects the entire world.
All the habitats here were carefully constructed to replicate the way animals live in the wild. And just like in the wild, animals can get hurt. If you've ever wondered exactly how veterinarians do what they do, the Molina Animal Care Center is for you: It's more than 14,000 square feet of operating tables, X-ray machines, and quarantine tanks. You might even get to watch a vet perform a live procedure as a staff member explains what's going on.
Here it's not just about exhibition: Rehabilitation, protection, and education are just as important. So dive on in: The water is fascinating.
Clownfish are from Mars (and Venus)
Anemonefish, more commonly known as clownfish, are part of a unique group of fish called protandrous hermaphrodites, which means they are all males with the ability to change into females. Each school of clownfish is lead by the largest, most dominant female. When she dies, the largest male turns into a female, and every remaining male moves up in the hierarchy.
