Shore Excursion: Exotic Miami Wildlife Adventure
Baby Aligator Holding
Tour Participation Requirements
The plants and animals that inhabit the Florida Everglades comprise an ecosystem unlike any other. Experience it up close and personal on this tour as you're whisked by coach to the very edge of the Glades, where your airboat awaits.
Basically an airplane engine strapped to a flatboat, this is the ideal way to get around in this 1.5-million-acre shallow-water wilderness. Your seasoned pilot is well-versed on the region and will show you where the wildlife gathers and the Seminoles once roamed, and explain the role this one-of-a-kind environment has played in Florida's history.
Back at the dock; spend some time at the wildlife exhibits where expert handlers will introduce you to the locals. The cast of characters changes daily, but includes Florida alligators, turtles and gopher tortoises, a big-eared fennec fox, and some much larger cats than those you may have at home. You'll love having your pic (but nothing else!) snapped as you hold a baby gator, too.
Down the road a piece, you'll see lots more critters at Flamingo Gardens – along with 200-year-old live oaks dripping with orchids, a collection of 18 State Champion trees (each one largest of its species), a picturesque flock of resident flamingos, and the Wray Home Museum, a fully restored 1933 residence built by the property's founders.
Nestled within these leafy grounds are habitats where some 90 species of native birds and animals thrive. Many of these residents were rescued after sustaining permanent injuries; others have been successfully bred there and will eventually be released into the wild.
Don't miss Josh the Bear's plush spread – complete with personal pool and cozy cave.
The fruits of Floyd's labor
Floyd Wray came to Florida in 1925 to open a tobacco business, but an orange shortage after the mega-hurricane of '26 changed that plan – and he and partners planted Flamingo Groves, which soon grew to 2000 acres and over 60 citrus varieties. During the 30's, exotic plants and seeds from around the globe were also planted, creating a precious botanical showcase that thrives to this day – with the fauna of the Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary thriving within it.
