About This New Orleans Tour
It hearkens back to the days when steamboats were the height of aquatic technology. The sleek yet elegant design, with a paddlewheel built from 26 tons of white oak and the traditional tiered design of yesteryear, will stand out before you even get onboard.
Welcome to the Steamboat NATCHEZ, the craft that will help you see New Orleans in a way that no other tour can. Built to embody the style of the steamboat era with all of the strength and reliability of modern construction, you'll have a blast checking out all of the sights of the French Quarter on your voyage.
And there's plenty of them to see. The gorgeous old-style homes along the riverfront beg for your attention, but don't forget the fun and excitement to be seen along the Riverwalk. The landscape along the Mississippi is the perfect blend of old-world elegance and modern style, a combination that the city pulls off perfectly like nowhere else can.
For an even more interesting bit of history, look inward: You are free to take a tour of the engine room at any time while onboard, to help you learn more about how these powerful, majestic craft are able to cut through the water so gracefully. In New Orleans, there's no better place to be than the port, which puts you geographically, culturally, and commercially in the heart of it all.
Science vs. Business
Robert Fulton is credited with inventing the steamboat, but there were several iterations of this 19th-century craft before his. One of them, created by a Connecticut man named John Fitch, was awarded an early patent. But because other patents were also granted, Fitch's investors withdrew, halting his progress. Why was Fulton successful? His friendship with powerful politician Robert Livingston, who had the connections Fulton needed. Guess it's true what they say about friends in high places.
