      About This New York Tour

Housing 1,700 works, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's American Wing stands proudly among an overall two million holdings. Pore over this rich collection, covering the classics, discovering newly presented masterworks, and following the narrative of United States art from the 1700s to the near past. Study these objects at close range, contextualizing them within the sweep and development of a national aesthetic.

Linger over the premier sculpture collection, featuring oft-overlooked marble and bronze works by Hiram Powers, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and Daniel Chester French. Discuss sculpture's importance, the mastery of sculptural techniques, characteristics of the Neoclassical and Beaux-Arts styles, and the historic significance of artists' chosen subjects.

Visit balcony galleries bathed in natural light and offering breathtaking views of Central Park, behind display cases filled with shimmering and colorful masterpieces of American silver, glassware, ceramics, and jewelry. Spanning the Colonial era to the 1900s, they include rare and exquisitely crafted silver pieces by Paul Revere, as well as stained glass by Tiffany, in the most comprehensive stained glass collection in any American museum.

In the Henry R. Luce Center, enjoy the Met's entire reserve collection of American fine and decorative art objects. Peruse a dazzling array of paintings, touching on a variety of topics, like the role of portraiture in crafting the nation's cultural history, the importance of still life and landscape in 19th-century American art, and genre and historical paintings that offer glimpses of everyday life from Colonial through Victorian times. All in all, a gloriously patriotic gathering.

A welcome worthy of some serious flag waving

One of the museum's most beautiful and popular spaces, the Charles Engelhard Court serves as the formal entrance to the American galleries. There you'll find two remarkable architectural treasures: the three-story facade of the Branch Bank of the United States (1822-24), originally located on Wall Street, plus a loggia designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1905 for the entrance to his country estate outside of New York City.
