About This New York Tour
This illuminating walk is a visual feast. See the stars of NYC's illustrious skyline, step into world-renowned buildings, and see examples of eclectic architecture found nowhere else on the planet. Along the way, your engaging guide points out architectural nuances and shares captivating stories of fame, fortune, and even superheroes.
Delve into it all as you take in dazzling views of the East River and the distinctive United Nations Building. Then head for 42nd Street to crane your neck at skyscrapers, and perhaps imagine Superman streaking across the sky. Check out the Ford Foundation Building's tree-filled atrium (a pioneer for indoor public spaces); ogle Art Deco style on a trio of towers: the Chanin Building, Chrysler Building, and Daily News Building (the model for the Daily Planet where Superman worked his day job).
Continue to the magnificent Beaux-Arts-style Grand Central Station to join the bustle of commuters, gaze up at the starry "sky" of the Main Concourse and hear about the origins and role of this temple of transportation. Marvel at the Carrere and Hastings' New York Public Library, a vast marble landmark guarded by a pair of noble lions (more about them below).
You’ll wind up your group walk in Bryant Park, an urban oasis for Manhattan's office workers and, if time allows, you’ll see the New York Times Building. If you're up for some solo exploring (perhaps Times Square, Broadway, or the Theater District), your guide will be happy to point the way. Moreover, even share some insider tips on cool spots for lunch or a drink.
Those famous library lions
This pair of haughty lions looks proud to symbolize the New York Public Library. Originally named "Leo Astor" and "Leo Lenox" to honor the library's founders, they were popularly known as Lord Astor and Lady Lenox. Then in the 1930s, Mayor Fiorello La Guardia renamed the pair to inspire New Yorkers facing the Great Depression. Those monikers, "Patience" and "Fortitude," have endured. Your guide can tell you which is which.
Please make your way to the lobby of the Hilton Hotel (formerly the Tudor Hotel) at 304 E 42nd St, New York, NY 10017
