About This New York Tour
From captivating heritage to what's happening right now, this borough is bursting with must-see sights and can't-miss experiences. How do you begin to grasp all of Brooklyn's history and culture, feel its cool vibe, and discover its hidden gems and quirky side?
Well, you start with a walk over the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge. You discover all that's wonderful, and weird, about this engineering marvel with a brilliant guide who loves Brooklyn and has a gift for storytelling. Then hear engrossing tales in the historic streets of Brooklyn Heights, a 19th-century refuge for genteel families escaping the squalor of Manhattan. Now you're getting a sense of that distinctive Brooklyn character.
Explore famous landmarks like Henry Ward Beecher's Plymouth Church of the Pilgrims (a famous stop on the Underground Railroad). And venture into DUMBO (that's Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) and get caught up in the energetic buzz of this former warehouse district, now a colorful and trendy gallery zone.
Along the way, your private group experience gives us a chance to pause and chat about what intrigues you, whether it's literature (Carson McCullers was just one of Brooklyn's many famous authors) or the tantalizing local food scene. You'll stop for photo ops too. And gladly share the top spots for breath-stealing views of Manhattan and Lady Liberty.
Just in case, your guide didn't mention the elephants…
It took more than a decade and $15 million to construct the Brooklyn Bridge. Yet some were skeptical about its safety when it opened in 1883. So in 1884, a famous New York showman came up with a way to reassure the public. P.T. Barnum paraded Jumbo, his prized seven-ton African elephant, and 20 of his elephant friends across the bridge. It didn't collapse and Barnum's stunt gave his circus a massive pop of publicity.
Please make your way to the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge. Look for your guide holding a sign with the name of the tour.
The walk typically ends in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood, often near Montague Street.
Tours operate rain or shine, but in the case of inclement weather, your guide will modify the tour so more time is spent indoors.
Plan to walk for approximately 2 miles at a gentle pace. If your mobility is limited, this tour may be too challenging for you. It is not wheelchair accessible.
