Here's the thing about Central Park, it's humongous! It's made up of a vast, 843-acre rectangle of hills, terraces, overlooks, fountains, lakes, bridges, sculptures, boulders, nature trails, and bridle paths, with a castle, a boathouse, a zoo, over 20 playgrounds, a classic carousel, and a billion-gallon reservoir–and that's just a partial list.
The place is absolutely beautiful, too, planned and planted well over a century ago by one of the world's acknowledged park design geniuses, Frederick Law Olmsted.
The pricey skylines of Central Park West and Fifth Avenue peek in and out of view as you wind through the park, stopping to visit and learn about places like the grand Bethesda Terrace and Fountain, where the Hair generation gathered; Cleopatra's Needle, sister obelisk to the ones in London and Paris; the Sheep Meadow, where locals come to relax and play; dramatic Belvedere Castle, on Vista Rock; and the Strawberry Fields Peace Garden, the memorial to John Lennon across the street from the Dakota.
Come along. It's a walk in the park, on wheels.
Central Park's majestic Jackie Kennedy Onassis Reservoir is a billion gallons big, 1.58 miles around, and over 130 years old. It's also, at this point, ornamental. Manhattan gets its famous tap water from elsewhere now. Which is a good thing, since the city's become so big that the reservoir’s water would be drained in just four hours of use, according to estimates.
