About This New York Tour
Central Park is a breath of fresh air from the hustle and bustle of the city. And that's exactly what Frederic Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux envisioned as they set about transforming a rocky and desolate piece of land into this masterpiece of urban design. Team up with GoBe to explore winding footpaths, rolling lawns, playing fields, glistening ponds, bridges, and monuments, all set against a backdrop of eye-popping skyline views.
This is no typical walk in the park. In the company of an entertaining guide, you discover how Olmsted's vision was shaped not only by 19th-century notions of the picturesque but by a keen sense of civic responsibility. You’ll discuss obstacles the park has encountered, the decline that left it in a sad state of decay, and its transformation during the 1980 and 90s into a national treasure. (Kudos to the Central Park Conservancy for that makeover.)
Exploring this green oasis, you feel how the park was designed to move and lift the human spirit. Olmsted described the ever-changing and seasonally shifting views as "passages of scenery." (No surprise the park has featured in hundreds of movies since 1908, when the first film, Romeo and Juliet, was shot there.) Immerse yourself in Olmstead's vision and savor the views as you stroll through a century and a half of fascinating heritage.
Your private tour can focus on the park's southern quarter, home to highlights like the restored Victorian Dairy, the Chess and Checkers House, Wollman Rink, the Pond, and Hallett Nature Sanctuary. Or you can head north to check out such iconic sights as Belvedere Castle and Strawberry Fields, the touching tribute to John Lennon. Just follow your guide to what intrigues you along the winding footpaths.
No GPS required
In a massive park, that encompasses 843 acres and 58 miles of pathways, you might imagine yourself lost if you opt to explore by yourself after our tour. But no worries. The park's early 20th-century lamp posts provide an ingenious wayfinding tool. Look for the numbers on the base of each lamp post. The first two or three numbers indicate the closest cross street; the last number indicates the side of town you're closest to, odd for west, even for east. Genius!
Please make your way to the southeastern quadrant of the park, near the 64th Street entrance. Look for your guide holding a sign with the tour name outside the main entrance.
As in many cities, keep your wallet or purse secured and leave the bling behind.
Tours operate rain or shine, but in the case of inclement weather, your guide will modify the tour so more time is spent indoors.
Plan to walk for approximately 2 miles at a gentle pace over evenly paved paths. You will have to descend several steps. If your mobility is limited, let us know and we can customize the tour.
