About This New York Tour
People think of "Broadway" as a near-mythic place that represents the pinnacle of theater. On this tour, you get the myth and the reality: Through stories, props, and guided visits to Broadway landmarks, you'll experience all the glittering lights, elaborate costumes and dazzling performances – and how the magic comes to life.
This elegant, 1,700-seat Art Nouveau landmark has been a staple of the Great White Way for over a century. Its deep red curtains and gold-lined stage have hosted some of the most famous plays in history. And if you've ever wanted to really understand what it's like to be in one, you can satisfy your curiosity in the prop room. Here you'll see robes, manes, set pieces, and other key props from legendary Disney musicals.
Of course, Broadway is more than just one theater – there are around 40 different venues in the theater district, and your guide will point out the places where so much history was made. You'll see the front facades of institutions like the Marquis and the Majestic, plus Rodgers & Hammerstein Way, a stretch of 44th Avenue renamed for the legendary writing team.
You'll learn the background of the district itself: How the Ziegfeld Follies series in the early 20th century helped establish the area's prominence in theater, why the "Times Square" label is something of a misnomer, and the famous on-screen names who got their start here. You'll see many depicted in caricatures on the walls of the renowned Sardi's restaurant, the fabled hangout of actors, agents, critics, and other insiders. Which, at least on this tour, includes you.
Getting the pigeons out was a little tricky
Times Square is one of the busiest pedestrian plazas in the world – on a high-volume day, close to half a million people will walk through it. It's hard to imagine it empty, but it has been cleared out for important events – like a Tom Cruise movie. To capture a shot of Cruise running through its deserted streets in 2001's Vanilla Sky, the city permitted the production crew to close the "Crossroads of the World" from 6 and 8:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning.
Please make your way to George M. Cohan statue at West 46th Street between Broadway & 7th Avenue towards the end of the block (NOT the statue in front of the red stairs.) Please note: the voucher is NOT redeemable at the New Amsterdam Theater ticket desk.
As in many cities, keep your wallet or purse secured and leave the bling behind.
This tour is available from April 2017 - October 2017 on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
