About This New York Tour
Truly one of the world's great museums, the Met is an absolute must-see – the largest art museum in America, with over two million works in its galleries and vaults. That can be daunting for anyone who's not sure they have the time (or attention span!) to take it on.
This tour provides an ideal solution: Give us just two hours and we'll slice through the Met's immensity like butter, guiding you on a tour covering not just its most famous masterworks, but a number of less-visited exhibits that add color and fascination to your experience – including art, sculpture, jewels, artifacts, and architecture.
You'll gaze at canvases from Van Gogh, encounter Rodin's bronze Thinker, and be thrilled by Monet's classic Water Lilies. Visit the colossal Temple of Dendur – so huge it required a new wing to house it. Marvel at perfectly preserved ancient Egyptian tomb models showing what life was like in Tut's times, come face to face with mummies, and meet "William," the Met’s portly blue mascot.
Skipping between centuries and continents, admire King Henry VIII's armor, Greek sculptures, and Roman frescoes; see the Antioch Chalice, believed to be the true "Holy Grail"; and wonder at beautifully carved Bisj poles from New Guinea, collected by a Rockefeller at the cost of his life.
Despite the express pace, your guide will have time to cover the intriguing backstories that bring these works to life. By sharing that knowledge and passion, they'll leave you fully engaged and satisfied that you've captured some of the Met's true magic – in two short hours.
A growth experience
The idea for the Met had its roots in the whirlwind art world of 1860s Paris, when a group of visiting American businessman and philanthropists decided it was high time New York had its own "institution of art." Starting small, the collection grew like wildfire, and by the time it moved into its palatial new Beaux-Arts home on Fifth Avenue in 1902, the museum was already ranked one of world's finest art centers. Expanded many times since, today the Met complex covers two million square feet. That's equivalent to 46 acres of art.
Please make your way to the main lobby of the Metropolitan Museum, at the statue of the Pharaoh, on your right upon entering. Your guide waits here to begin the tour.
As in many cities, keep your wallet or purse secured and leave the bling behind.
All bags are subject to security inspection before entering the Museum. All large backpacks, 11 x 15 x 5 inches (28 x 38 x 13 cm) and bigger must be checked. To avoid a long wait in the checkroom line, travel light for your tour.
Please note that the Met rooftop is closed during the winter from November through April and reopens from early May through the end of October, weather permitting.
The Temple of Dendur is occasionally rented out for private events with no advance notice provided. While usually this occurs in the evening times, closures may impact this tour. In such cases, other works from the Egyptian collection will be substituted.
Plan to stand or walk for the duration of the tour. You'll need to keep up with the pace of the group. MoMA is wheelchair accessible; bring a companion to offer any assistance.
