About This New York Tour
This is an invitation you to lose yourself in beauty. Will you be seduced by Degas' graceful dancers, mesmerized by Monet's reflective water scenes, enchanted by Renoir's charming portraits? That's the dazzling dilemma of this collection. Strolling from gallery to gallery, you experience art that invites us all to see the world in a new light.
With an art historian devoted exclusively to your private group, you discover how the Impressionists introduced a brighter, freer way to portray their world. You understand why they sought to capture everyday subjects like city streets, cafe life, and country scenes. You learn that their work wasn't always as popular as it today. And you get to know Impressionism in context as we take in the entire sweep of 19th-century art movements.
You’ll start with a glance back to the Neo-classicists and Romantics to understand art before the Impressionists. Then you’ll get to the heart of your walk: the galleries displaying luminous paintings by Manet, Monet, Renoir, and Degas. You’ll also see the work of Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt, the two major female Impressionist artists, and admire sculptures and pastels by Degas. Along the way, your guide weaves a narrative to illuminate the art you see.
If time allows, you’ll continue to the Post-Impressionists and admire Van Gogh's landscapes of Provence, Gauguin's images of Polynesian women, as well as paintings by Cezanne, Henri Rousseau, Pissarro, Seurat, and the early work of Picasso and Matisse. Your guide leads you from painting to painting, from period to period. Your imagination is stoked, your art IQ is soaring. All before you get to Modernism.
The establishment wasn't impressed
When talented young artists like Claude Monet began painting in the 1860s, they sought to capture moments in time. Critics at the prestigious Salon de France scorned their art, considering it merely "impressions," not finished paintings. Their dismissive label endured but their opinions did not. Those critics would surely be impressed by current Monet price tags. In 2016, Christie's sold the artist's pink and purple "Grainstack" for $81.4 million.
