About This New York Tour
Immigrants from far-flung lands have long flocked to Manhattan's Lower East Side to live out their American Dream. But no other group of people has impacted the city with the cultural staying power of the Jewish settlers that arrived from Russia and Eastern Europe in the early 20th century straight through to the 1960s.
Have a scholar tell you all about it. Your GoBe guide is an MA- or Ph.D.- holder, expert in Jewish history and cuisine, and a passionate advocate who doesn't just parrot a memorized spiel. Together, you'll go to the oldest Russian Orthodox synagogue in the nation and to The Forward, a Jewish newspaper that played a key role in American socialism. This may be the only place where talk of religion and politics is highly encouraged!
Hungry for more? Good. Because you're also going to hit some of the Lower East Side's top Jewish eateries. There's Katz's Delicatessen, where loving parents went to "Send A Salami To (Their) Boy In The Army" during WWII. The deli is also home to corned beef and pastrami deliciously aged for 30 full days. Russ and Daughters wows with their smoked fish and salads. And Kossar's Bialys serves up authentic onion-stuffed baked bialys. Whatever you do, do NOT call them bagels!
By the time the tour ends, your belly will be full of scrumptious delicacies. Your head full of fun facts, and your heart full of affection for your GoBe Guide. And that's OK. Just promise not to get all schmaltzy when it's time to say goodbye.
"I'll have what she's having"
Oh…God. YES! YES! YES! YES! Who can forget the scene that had Meg Ryan's character very convincingly faking the big O in the 1989 blockbuster When Harry Met Sally? Well, that cinematic gem was filmed in none other than Katz's Delicatessen. You can even sit in Sally's seat to devour the deli's famously gratifying corned beef. Just look for the plaque that says, "Where Harry met Sally…hope you have what she had!" and let loose.
Please make your way to Katz's Deli, 205 E Houston St, New York, NY. Look for your guide holding a sign with the name of the tour.
