About this New York tour
Believe it or not, a cartoonist who dabbled in anthropology and exploration is still relevant today, despite having died in 1949. Robert Ripley was like Indiana Jones, but with drawing skills. He parlayed his Believe It or Not! newspaper cartoon, which focused on weird but true facts, into an empire. Ripley traveled to over 200 countries to find items for his cartoon. Many of these items ended up in what he dubbed his odditoriums and museums of the bizarre.
These days, you can see some of the very items that Ripley found, as well as newer oddities, in Ripley's Believe It or Not Times Square Odditorium. This is a newer version of an odditorium that was in Times Square until 1972. It closed then because the real Times Square was getting too seedy, weird, and, um, odd. Now Times Square is cleaned up, and the Odditorium is back to being the weirdest thing in the district.
You'll be amazed by extraordinary taxidermy like the albino giraffe, the six-legged cow, and chicken with four feet. And how about a barnyard of two-headed animals? You can shock your friends with the new Amazonian Makeover exhibit. It digitally "shrinks" your head, adds war paint and bones to your image, and makes a picture that you can share to amaze your social media friends. A lot more exciting than the standard selfie.
While there are odditoriums throughout the world, this GoBe attraction has Big Apple-specific attractions. There is the 17-foot tall World Trade Center replica made out of 470,000 matchsticks. And The Fastest Tour of New York is just that 16 steps down a staircase in which you get to see, to hear, the sights and sounds of the big city. These are just some of the exhibits you will see. Believe it or not!
Taps for Ripley
Since Robert Ripley spent his life looking for oddities and weird coincidences for his Believe It or Not! empire, the way he died seemed, well, oddly fitting. In 1949, Ripley, who was an early television pioneer, hosted Believe It or Not! ;one of the medium's first reality shows. In Episode 13, Ripley had a fatal heart attack during the live program. The show's topic? Why the song Taps was played at military funerals. Ripley might have been bemused by such a coincidence.
