The bones of our planet are exposed in this dramatically tortured landscape. Here in the San Andreas Fault zone, California's defining geological feature, you're in the midst of one the most powerful forces in nature.
What's happening here is that the Pacific Plate (to the west of the fault) is moving northwest at about three inches a year, grinding against the North American Plate, headed in the opposite direction at about one inch a year. You'll squeeze into the narrow slot canyon where the plates collided, perhaps sensing the tension that could spell cataclysm for millions.
The stark and incredible scenery has been evolving for about 30 million years, and GoBe takes you where you'll feel the very soul of this ancient landscape. Geologists divide the 800-mile fault into three segments, and each has a different earthquake risk. This is California's sleeping giant. And it'll shake up all your senses.
Whole lotta shaking going on
More than a million earthquakes rattle our planet every year, but most don't affect humans because they happen on the ocean floor and in remote areas. But for the United States, the 1906 earthquake that ruptured the San Andreas Fault and devastated San Francisco was an unprecedented disaster. The tremors were felt from southern Oregon to Los Angeles, and as far inland as central Nevada.
