Tour Participation Requirements
It's the largest animal ever to have walked, swam, or flown, and you have a pretty good chance of encountering one on this cruise. The blue whale reaches nearly 100 feet in length and 200 tons in weight; its heart alone is six feet wide and weighs 1,000 pounds. (Think about that.) But despite having a mouth big enough to hold 99 tons of food and water, it has a teeny-tiny throat and can't swallow anything bigger than a basketball. (So you're safe.)
And if you think it's tough keeping your baby fed and happy, consider this: for the first seven months of its life, a blue whale calf drinks up to 110 gallons of milk a day, gaining 200 pounds every 24 hours.
Adult blues are fast swimmers, which, combined with their size, is why they weren't hunted in the early days of whaling. All that changed in the early 20th century, when technology made it possible to efficiently catch, kill, and recover the 120 barrels of oil a blue whale could yield. After that, it was open season. In 1931 alone, more than 29,000 were killed. Despite the 1966 ban on hunting blue whales, the population has been slow to recover, and it's thought that there are only about 14,000 blue whales in the world today. So if you see one on this cruise, keep in mind what a special moment it is.
