      About This San Diego Tour

Chambers of commerce and tourism boards aren't known for their modesty or objectivity, but ... "America's Finest City"? It's like drinking from a "World's Best Accountant" coffee mug – your-co-workers aren't going to think, "Guess that's settled."

Nevertheless: By any objective measure, San Diego is at least "A Really Darned Nice American City" – a laid-back seaside paradise with postcard-pretty land- and seascapes, a fascinating history, and so many sights to see that you'll need a sound sightseeing strategy. Fortunately, the trolley system gives you all the "finest" sights and sounds with expert commentary and the freedom to stop at the places that interest you.

If you stay aboard for the whole two-hour tour, you'll learn all about the city's Spanish settlers, naval history, fishing, surfing, Chargers, Padres, and shopping. You'll see old towns, new towns, gaslights, beaches, marine parks, walk-around parks, ships, sailors, zoos, beaches, and fishermen.

But the beauty of the "hop-on, hop-off" philosophy is that you can pick and choose the places you really want to explore. The trolley has 11 stops, including Old Town, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village, Horton Plaza Shopping Center, the Gaslamp Quarter, Coronado Ferry Landing, the Hotel del Coronado, Balboa Park and Zoo, and Little Italy.

What this means is that you can get off and explore Seaport Village, then catch the next trolley to wherever else strikes your fancy, until you're ready to say, "Yup! Clearly the finest city!" or "Nah, (YOUR TOWN HERE) is finer." Either way, we’re sure you will enjoy finding out for yourself what makes San Diego great.

Some people are just bad with names

Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first European to navigate the coast of California, landing in what is now San Diego in 1542. He named it "San Miguel" before continuing his naming spree up the coast to San Salvador, Victoria, Cabo de Pinos and Bahia de los Pinos, today known as Catalina Island, San Clemente, Point Reyes, and Monterey Bay. Not a single name stuck.
