San Francisco's history isn't all about cable cars and chocolate. The City by the Bay holds a dark past, which comes to life at the San Francisco Dungeon. Live actors and amazing 360-degree sets combine to share the facts and legends that helped shape the city. There's a reason - why this is the first U.S. location of Europe's popular Dungeons chain. After all, a city built on a lust for gold is going to have an awful lot of shenanigans in its past

Start your journey to the dungeon by descending in a mine shaft elevator. Colonel Jack Gamble is your host, bringing horror and humor to your visit. See how the Gold Rush changed the once-peaceful area to one filled with greed and hysteria. Then navigate yourself out of the Sutter's Mill maze. Watch out for The Hounds, just when you think you're safe, the gang come out of nowhere to shake you down for money.

In The Court Room of San Francisco, Alcalde Meade, ex-mayor and judge of the city, is like a demented Judge Judy, ruling on a whim. If you escape the gallows, you may end up shanghaied, drugged, kidnapped, and forced to work on a ship.

Then there's the plague. The plague hit Chinatown at the turn of the last century, thanks to rat infestations. If that wasn't enough to get through, imagine what the Ghosts of Alcatraz can do to you. You might end up a prisoner as well - at least for a few minutes. Experience 200 years of San Francisco history in one hour and live to tell about it.

      A judge with a grudge

Dungeon dweller Alcalde Meade (Alcade is a Spanish term for a mayor with judicial powers) was a real person in the old days in San Francisco. He was memorialized in Herbert Asbury's classic book, The Barbary Coast. Meade knew little about the law, but he knew what he didn't like - Mexicans and cigarette-smokers. He once ordered a Mexican cigarette smoker to the gallows for stealing a horse, finding him guilty because he admitted to smoking. That should be enough to make you quit!
