About this San Francisco, California tour

There are fewer than 200 places designated national monuments in the United States. But if you're looking for one that features the tallest trees in the world, there's only one.

The coastal redwood is the crown jewel of the Muir Woods. Nature's own skyscrapers, they soar nearly 300 feet, and have been growing here for eight centuries.

First established in 1908 under the order of President Theodore Roosevelt, Muir Woods holds monuments to historical figures from the Buddha to President Franklin D. Roosevelt; the latter had a commemorative ceremony held in his honor in the woods' Cathedral Grove.

Muir Woods is an old-growth forest, which means it has stood for many years without disturbance by humans. As a result, the forest has a unique and diverse ecological system that consists of many rare species living in harmony, animals like spotted owls, salmon, mule deer, river otters, and even wild turkeys.

Like its neighboring towns of Sausalito and San Francisco, Muir Woods is the perfect result of a combination of various elements that have come together to make something astounding.

      Big tree fall hard

On July 8, 1996, around 50 people got the chance to watch the life of an 800 year-old redwood tree come to a dramatic close in Muir Woods' Cathedral Grove. When it fell, the 200-foot-tall, 12-foot-wide tree created a colossal crash loud enough to be heard from half a mile away. The tree caused no damage and, as is custom in old-growth forests, has not been moved or cleaned up.
