About this San Francisco, California tour

You might think that the people who designed the northern areas of San Francisco could see into the future.

Why? The roads and hills in this area make it challenging to navigate with a vehicle. But a Segway makes the perfect choice for tearing through the hilly streets at over 12 mph.

The city's planners couldn't have imagined a form of transportation like a Segway, but for those who are game for a two-wheeled challenge, it fits the bill.

We're talking about Russian Hill, where you'll get a chance to see Lombard Street, known as the world's crookedest. (They invented the word.) If you can handle its hairpin turns and steep elevation changes, feel free to reward yourself by pausing on one of the many overlooks that provide panoramic views of the city.

At the top of the hill, zip over to the Aquatic Park on the northern edge of the city. This tranquil park features soft green grass, beautiful views of the bay, and some of the oldest ships in the country.

At Pier 39, the giant crab statue welcomes you back to the city, with flailing claws that stick out amongst the crowd like sore…well, not thumbs, but you get the point. It's almost like he's pleasantly surprised that you made it. And when you're riding a Segway in a city that is known for having some of the most hilly, crooked streets in the whole world, well, you may be a little surprised yourself.

      Horse Kill Road

How challenging are the streets in San Francisco? Just ask 19th century horses in the area (not literally – Mr. Ed wasn't around back then). On the steep city streets, horses going uphill would often become overwhelmed by the weight of their carriage, sliding backwards so severely that they sometimes died from the impact. These tragic events were what inspired the invention of San Francisco's renowned cable cars.
