About this San Francisco, California tour

You might be on the top deck, by the rail. People are chatting, nibbling, toasting. Gentle guitar strains drift up; waves slap the hull; gulls circle Alcatraz. The Bridge – that's right, this isn't a generic, lower-case bridge – draws near. If the timing and angle are just right, its two towers frame the setting sun. If not, it's still just right.

Someone giggles. A freighter's horn echoes and fades. The lights of four cities flicker on. You might giggle to yourself – not at anything funny, but because you realize: This is it. Your San Francisco upper-case Moment. And it's an instant of such completeness that you don't quite know how to react, so why not giggle.

You rejoin the conversation, and the instant slips away. But the Moment lasts forever.

      Primary color

During its construction in the 1930s, the color of the Golden Gate Bridge was a hotly debated subject. The Navy, concerned about visibility for planes and ships, wanted it painted with black and yellow stripes. The olive-drab Army, bizarrely, urged candy-cane red and white. Luckily, the bridge's architect, Irving Morrow, took a liking to the orange primer coating the new steel. Debate over.
