About this Sitka Tour
If you love seeing wild animals in their natural habitat, look no further than Sitka Sound. This gem of Southeast Alaska boasts the largest variety of coastal wildlife in the region, and your tour brings it all up close. Come aboard a waterjet-driven boat specially designed for the twists and turns of Sitka Sound’s island wilderness for a breathtaking nature experience.
You’ll have the opportunity to see some of Alaska’s most iconic creatures cavorting on shore and splashing through the waves around you. Meet sea otters, sea lions, harbor seals, whales, brown bears, bald eagles, porpoises, and other animals as you experience nature’s bounty from the comfort of a heated cabin or on the open-air observation deck.
You’ll also learn about what you’re seeing from an experienced onboard naturalist, who will explain the unique factors that allow a vast array of wildlife to thrive on Sitka Sound. The history of the sea otter population’s exploitation and near extinction at the hands of Russian fur traders in the 1800s makes the otters’ rejuvenation and abundance today even more remarkable. This GoBe tour is so confident you will see otters, a bear, or a whale that you will receive a $100 cash refund if no creatures come out to play during your cruise.
Either before or after your cruise, take the time to wander the streets of opulent Sitka, once called the "Paris of the Pacific." St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Cathedral, painstakingly restored to its 19th-century splendor, and the Russian Bishop’s House are can’t-miss sites in this picturesque waterfront town, the former capital of Russian America. Yes, Russian America, the name given to Russian colonial possessions in the Americas from 1733-1867. When the Russian tsar decided to sell the remote colony for $7.2 million in 1867, it spelled the end to Russia's North American enterprise.
Last stop, Sitka
Sitka Sound is one of the last stops humpback whales make in the region before migrating far south for the winter. The whales are often found here later than anywhere else in Southeast Alaska since the Sound feeds into the Pacific Ocean. Every November, the citizens of Sitka celebrate their place as one of the humpbacks’ final stops with WhaleFest, where marine science and local flavor come together for a whale of a good time!
Please make your way to Crescent Harbor Visitors Dock or Oconnell Bridge Dock, to meet our representative.
