      About this Skagway, Alaska tour

The riches promised by the Klondike gold strike forever changed the tiny trading town of Caribou Crossing, which stood in the path of hordes of ‘98ers making their way to the Dawson City gold fields. Named for the huge herds of caribou that traveled through the area, which were eventually decimated by the passage of so many people, the city was eventually renamed Carcross in 1904.

The town hosts the longest continuously operating store in the area, the Matthew Watson General Store, whose operations spans back to 1898 – it is a great place to stop on your tour to get your passport stamped.

Proving that size doesn’t matter when it comes to amazing, a short ways out of town, your tour will take in what has been called the world’s smallest desert.  Not actually a desert, Carcross Desert is comprised of a square-mile of northern sand dunes sitting on an ancient lakebed, which is ideal for outdoor playtime. The highlight of your adventure is Emerald Lake, known for its vivid turquoise water.

These are just some of the sites you will see as you retrace the path of the ‘98ers who went trekking off to the Yukon in search of their fortune, only they didn’t have Hummer H3s.

      Saving a culture

Carcoss resident and respected Tlingit elder, Norman James, is doing the only thing you can do when your language is slowly ebbing away: he is enshrining them on recordings in hopes that the younger generation will learn the old stories as told in the native tongue.  Norman’s rich baritone voice is perfect for telling the stories of a culture that had no written language- guess that meant no homework?
