About this St. Augustine, Florida tour
Ice cream was their first dream.
St. Augustine natives Henry and Esther Whetstone opened their ice cream store in 1966; now called Tedi's Olde Tyme Ice Cream, it's still going strong. But that first success gave them a taste for more.
Starting in their kitchen, as they had with ice cream, they taught themselves the chocolate business, one recipe at a time. By 1967, they were selling 13 varieties of fudge, plus hand-dipped chocolates. By the '70s, they'd opened a larger facility and even more stores. By 1984, they occupied a 10,000-square-foot factory and were wholesaling to Nestle, Hershey’s, and M&M Mars.
With over 200 grades of chocolate to pick from, every detail matters, as the Whetstone chocolatiers will tell you: color, flavor, granule fineness, kneading time, percentage of cocoa butter, the weather, even where the beans are grown. But there's as much art to it as science, as you'll learn when you see what this legendary brand is cooking up with its new "artisan" flavors. But don't worry – if you like your chocolate the old-fashioned way, you're in the right place.
Love or Chocolate?
Eating chocolate releases two chemical mood-lifters found naturally in the brain: dopamine and serotonin, which are also released in the heat of love, passion, and lust. In other words, eating chocolate can mimic the feelings produced during sex. For good measure, add chocolate's energy boost, and its aphrodisiac reputation is understandable.
